Essential oils
are
oily substances found in the roots, leaves, stems, or flowers of
aromatic plants, also in the bark of some trees such as Pine, Fir,
Cinnamon, or the peels of some citrus fruits. A complex mixture of
up to two hundred and fifty chemicals, these fragrant substances,
synthesised in plants by the energy of the sun are extracted by the
ancient process of steam distillation with the exception of a few
citrus oils which are obtained by cold expression, and by chemical
extraction for Rose or Jasmine
Essential oils are popular among alternative practitioners and the
public alike, but so complex is their chemistry that it is
impossible to know exactly how they work, although the
classification of molecules in classes or families helps in
explaining some of the therapeutic results consistently observed in
aromatherapy.
How to use essential oils:
Inhalation: Place a few drops of essential oil on
a paper tissue or a handkerchief and inhale deeply
For colds and coughs put two or three drops of essential oil into
very hot water and breathe in slowly.
From a Spray: Put about 150 ml of water into a spray bottle, add 10
or 12 drops of essential oil and shake well before spraying the
room; a good range of vaporisers is also available in specialised
shops.
In a bath: mix ten drops of pure essential oil in
a tea spoon of full fat milk (or milk powder with a little water to
make a paste) and add this mixture to a bath
On the skin: add a few drops of essential oil to a
tablespoon of vegetable oil to obtain a concentration of 10%
maximum; apply this mixture to the sole of the feet, or into the
crease of the elbow; at a lower concentration of 3% maximum, it can
be applied as a full body massage. or simply on the chest and back
for respiratory conditions
Internally: one drop of essential oil mixed in a
tea spoon of honey, three times a day; avoid ingestion of oils high
in Ketones or Phenols.
